There is a quote attributed to Richard J. Daley: “Power is dangerous unless you have humility.”
Certain circumstances can make one examine and research power a little closer
Questioning if power changes the people it was given to, and why they would allow it to change them
It seems that for too many, it is more about having the power and name than being an actual leader
As stated in the quote, if one has humility, power can become safe for the one it is given to
The person becomes arrogant and cowardly, treating others with disrespect, showing no empathy
Although, if power is used responsibly, a positive change can be brought about for all
Unfortunately, many are not humble, allowing them to act on corrupt impulses, denying vulnerability
Many people in power are known to lack any emotional connection with others, feeling they know all
They are heroes in their story, using their power for their benefit, it’s for self-interest and ego
If those experiencing this do not realize it, bad things will happen to them and those around them
So powerful, they back-stab, avoid, refuse to change or listen, passive aggression begins to show
So what does one do when encountering power like this, a “leader” who lets their true colors show
This person shows zero respect for others and completely demoralizes their colleagues
Can’t mention concerns, as other “powerful” individuals agree with their leadership, so they remain
Mindset of “us vs. them”, never seeing true colors, a corruption of power we have seen for centuries
When coming across several arrogant, power-hungry leaders, there are a few things we can do
Be kind and professional, don’t gossip, speak up, ask questions, document as needed, set boundaries
Whatever actions you must take, never allow others to gaslight you; you are not the issue
Sometimes you may just need to walk away from the toxicity, no longer allowing it to be your misery
Power can be dangerous, but power can also be amazing; it is all in how people choose to use it
Those who use their power for the good and become advocates, instead of only seeking control
This is power with humility, showing grace, generosity, productivity, respectfulness, without judgement
These individuals are true leaders, using power in the best interest of all to advocate and reach goals
When people are given power and influence, their true nature comes to light
Too many seem to forget that there is power in kindness, as it shows true strength
There is a way to be firm but kind, kindness with power shows security and confidence
Those in power should guide, lead, be positive, set standards, show respect, but never disrespect
