The Outcast
By: LIZ HARDIE
In your life, have you ever felt like a complete and total outcast
With anyone, even friends or family, you just want to survive your past
Around family you remain quiet, as no one could hear you any way
Siblings voices carry over yours, just easier to say nothing and keep emotions at bay
They were loud, hilarious, full of jokes and so full of life
You were quiet, somber, dark and hoping for someone to see your pain and strife
As years passed, your family still never knew what caused the darkness, the pain
The partying, lies, drinking, drugs, many mistakes made, shockingly kept you sane
Many days you’d sink into a darker hole, although some decisions were hurting those you love
But those that hurt never knew your pain, there were many things the outcast did not speak of
They never felt heard when they did speak, so it was easier to remain quiet about it
One day the words would roll off your tongue and all would know why you remained so quiet
Feeling as if you had handled it on your own for so long, you can continue to do it from now on
Some days you get angry at those that tell their life stories to all, so dramatic with their privacy gone
As time goes by, as an outcast, you learn to live life by yourself, trusting very few
You tell very little of your life, enough to appease those around and to get you through
This can be a downfall as you choose solitude and alone time over a get together
Too many people, too much noise or drama, takes you to where you reach the end of your tether
Anxiety can overcome you when in these situations, it can be hard when few people know of your past
No extra drama is needed, you are not fake, you are a private person who wants relationships to last
You may miss phone calls or texts from your loved ones, by either lack of emotional or physical capability
All you hope is that they understand you will always be there for them, you just seek tranquility
After having to live with deep, dark secrets for so many years, you now just want a calm, simple life
This will continually make you feel like an outcast, yet finally using your voice, you feel free and alive
Who knows, maybe you are still the outcast, but you are loved, and there are few that know your pain
Those few want the best for you, they want you to thrive, your happiness they will help you gain
Understanding your past, as it is no longer a secret, it is your decision on where to go from here
A quiet, somber outcast you may be, yet love and support no longer makes you feel dark and in fear
